About Us
GlobeMed is a forum where dreamers and doers come together and become a force for positive social change. A nationwide network of 56 chapters, GlobeMed chapters partner with grassroots organizations based in disadvantaged communities to fight health and human rights disparities. In this way we are able to empower communities to enact their own change, using the informed opinion of people in the community who care most, rather than blindly doing misguided and inefficient philanthropy, a problem that many organizations fall into despite good intentions.
At Duke, we are the premier voice for global health equity and community empowerment. We challenge our members to develop and implement solutions to the problems we face with our partner organizations. Through our past partnership with Salud Sin Límites, we supported the building of Siuna, Nicaragua’s self-sustainable domestic violence shelter, “El Centro de Atencion Psicosocial.” With SHED in Tanzania, we helped with a variety of maternal health and water sanitation projects, with a focus on schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease. GlobeMed at Duke students visited our current partner, Global Health Network Uganda, in the summer of 2018 and 2019. With GHNU, we have supported child & maternal health efforts and sanitation & hygiene education.
The Grassroots On-Site Work (GROW) Internship provides the opportunity for students to participate in the annual internship on the ground with our international partnerships and to attend the annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit in Evanston, IL.
GlobeMed at Duke is the niche where Blue Devils delve hands-on into enacting social change.
GlobeMed at Duke is social change done right. Join the movement.
